The emerald is a lustrous gem sparkling in green colour like a green blade of grass. The emerald without inclusions is transparent, brilliant and radiant. It spreads bright rays. It is almost like a fire in green. Unlike the other gems emerald shines in the artificial light in its original colour. But the emeralds without inclusions are very rare. A good quality emerald costs more than $500 per caret.

Rectangular step cut is generally used for emerald. When the cutting is done like that the depth and the beautiful colour of the emerald crystal is focused. So, the cutting of emerald is somewhat difficult. When proper handling is not there while cutting the emerald, it breaks or some particles come out. Emerald is less hard than native diamond and Ruby. This is a very soft gem. Its hardness on the ‘moh scale’ is 7.5.

As a result of these inclusions, an emerald costs somewhat less. If these inclusions are on the upper surface the durability of emerald is likely to be less.

Emeralds are available in the mines of Colombia, Brazil, Zambia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Russia, Egypt, India and Africa. Of all of them the Columbian & Zambia emeralds are said to be the best. The ‘Muzo’ mines of Columbia are yielding the best of the best emeralds. In the whole world, 90% of emeralds come from Columbian mines alone. These Columbian emeralds look more transparent with a good colour.

As soon as the emeralds are extracted from the mines, there are dipped in oil. That covers the scratches on the surface of the emeralds. Sometimes to cover the scratches and to improve the colour of the emeralds oil is used. The seller uses this method to cheat the buyer. In such a case, if the buyer keeps the emeralds under the flow of water its purity will be known to some extent. There after it should be tested in microscope.

Any gem should be bought on the basis of a certificate and not with a belief merely. You get all the details of purity only in a certificate.
